Friday 18 October 2024: 10am to 4pm

Talk, tuition & lunch.

Van Gogh spent the last two years of his life in Arles. But how many budding Van Goghs can we now bring to the Barle? This autumn, London’s National Gallery kicks off celebrations for its 200thanniversary with a fabulous show of Van Gogh’s late works. Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers brings the artist’s imagination to vibrant life. The painter suffuses the mundane with heartfelt emotion, he looks at ordinary people and familiar places through the impassioned lens of his tumultuous inner life.

The art critic Rachel Campbell Johnston will begin the day with a brief illustrated talk about the life of Van Gogh and the ideas explored in this landmark National Gallery exhibition.

The artist George Irvine will then lead you in the footsteps of Van Gogh. It was not naturalism that Van Gogh aimed for. “Just a glance at reality” is not enough, he wrote. “Imagination is a capacity that must be developed.” He set out to capture his world as it could be transformed by literature, music and poetry; by colour, rhythm and light.

Prepare to plunge deep into your artistic palette, to unloose your brush. Mix dreams and memories about in the materials. Let your paint and your personality merge.
